Microchips that measure anomalies in beer kegs, pizza that can be purchased directly through your television and robots who understand and interpret our language to solve real-life issues. These are just a few examples of the services InnoWave offer, whose mantra is to change lives through innovation.
All of InnoWave’s products are developed in the heart of Lisbon where our very own CEO, Tiago Mendes Gonçalves’, creative spirit lies. The company was founded over a decade ago and after only six months of opening its doors, had already won its first contract for Belgacom in Brussels.
Today, InnoWave extends its services to customers in 18 countries. They’ve recently collaborated with an air traffic control company within the IoT space to install and control sensors on building lights. Testing over 20,000 per month, they not only ensure they are working, but also alert the customer should anything be amiss. For another one of their clients, InnoWave were able to produce 500 devices that control the temperature of beer barrels, also warning if any had been tampered with. This solution was primarily created in the Netherlands but is already being exported to Belgium and China.
It’s always been InnoWave’s ambition to become the leader in innovation and digital transformation. InnoWave has more than doubled its results in the last three years, exceeding the 17-million-euro billing threshold – 65% of our business being obtained from outside the heart of Lisbon. One of Tiago Mendes Gonçalves’ key priorities are,“the export of services and sophisticated software solutions to mature and competitive markets, with the dimension in which they want to play. The dream of creating a technological multinational company based in Portugal is now a reality because from the first moment we have exported more than we sell here.”
Building the future is an assumed motivation of InnoWave, with the company having offices in the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States of America and the United Arab Emirates. Their growth has become stronger every year, and we are now a team of 350 and continuing to hire to support our growth strategy.
Talent and motivation
InnoWave’s spirit is a trait that is considered fundamental to the success of the company and this spirit is carried throughout the global offices.
“It is essential, given our geographical expansion, to make sure that everyone breathes the InnoWave spirit, so we can learn and exchange experiences through different offices.”
Graduating in Electronic and Systems Engineering, with an MBA in Nova and a postgraduate degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Tiago Mendes Gonçalves has been married for 20 years with three children. When InnoWave was first created Tiago was fully dedicated to new inventions within the business, however, more recently he has appointed a strong, talented team to take over, whilst he concentrates on the business-critical decisions that is much needed in any company.
InnoWave identifies the needs of their clients before the problems arise, the company concentrate on making solutions to make life easier and solve challenges. Behind the scenes, InnoWave perfect their solutions in all areas – artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, technology and digital innovation.
The result is solutions such as YuBuy, a television commercial platform in Portugal already working for clients such as NOS and Vodafone, that allows you to shop with the click of a button on your sofa at home – it even allows you to test drive cars from a Kia to a Porsche!
“Last year we sold more than a million pizzas, which makes our store the largest in the country in sales.”
This is only the start for InnoWave’s software offering, they are already testing new applications to take to market.
For every challenge, there’s a solution
“A lot of what we have built here is born from the challenges that are being introduced by client companies,”explains the entrepreneur.
A solution that is currently being tested in some convenience stores allows a customer to pick up products they need, pay and leave without any interactions with a cashier – as you add products to your basket, you pay automatically through MBWay or through your bank. This type of solution can also be used to measure stock in a warehouse and can automatically tell you when it needs to be replenished.
One of InnoWave’s products, InnLink, increases workspace optimisation through a room booking and headcount program to better leverage common spaces and meeting rooms.
Another product they also developed and improved was one that controls production, comfort and well-being for animals on a farm. All factors are measured – from room temperature to humidity, the ability to measure food, health and animal growth. The project developed for pig production even led to the re-brand of the company slogan – “changing ‘people’s’lives through innovation” had to be changed as we were also improving lives for animals.
“What matters is to create good solutions, to be challenged; we are always on the lookout for “things to fix”.
This is what InnoWave are best at – finding the gaps, improving them and bringing change to improve lives. InnoWave offer a gamification app called CityPoints – this allows citizens points for improving the city (such as volunteering or using public transportation); points that translate into rewards – free entry to museums or a variety of vouchers. This product has been recognised for its innovation among 400 nominees from 180 countries at the World Summit Awards, making it a huge achievement for InnoWave.
InnoWave will continuously aim to lead in all areas, from artificial intelligence to mobility, from automation to IoT. And for Tiago Mendes Gonçalves there are no limits in creativity to change the future.
