HCA Healthcare, one of the largest healthcare companies in the U.S., has suffered a significant data breach. Hackers stole patient data affecting around 27 million patients in nearly two dozen states, including facilities in Florida and Texas. The compromised dataset includes patients’ personal information and certain visit records. The breach was discovered when the stolen data was sold on a data breach forum. While no critical clinical details appear to have been disclosed, patients’ full names, cities, and details of their last provider visits were compromised. HCA claims that no medical diagnoses or other critical medical information were impacted. However, the hacker has asserted having “emails with health diagnoses that correspond to a client ID.” The company says the breached data originated from an external storage location exclusively used for formatting email messages. Shares of HCA Healthcare remained relatively unaffected by the news.
